Concert Program

D. Shostakovich: Piano Trio No. 2 in E Minor, Op. 67
W. A. Mozart: Piano Quartet in G Minor, K. 478

Dmitri Shostakovich composed his Second Piano Trio in 1944, and it remains one of his best-known and most frequently performed chamber works. The composition was profoundly influenced by the horrors of World War II. It is highly demanding for the performers, requiring exceptional virtuosity from the pianist, violinist, and cellist alike. The work has often been described as a form of “black comedy,” in which despair alternates with grotesque humor.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano Quartet in G Minor, K. 478, composed in 1785, is a significant and technically challenging chamber work renowned for its dramatic, almost symphonic character. The opening Allegro movement is filled with tension and turbulence. The second movement, Andante, provides contrast through its lyrical and singing qualities, while the work concludes with a joyful and radiant Rondo. The composition was groundbreaking in its time, as it placed the piano on an equal footing with the string trio.

The concert is supported by Eskon Autopelti Oy, Kliini Autokäsittely, K-Supermarket Leppävirta, Kukka- ja hautauspalvelu S. Kinnunen Ky, Leppävirran Tilikeskus Oy, Maanrakennus Viljakainen Oy, and Warkauden Rotaryklubi.
